Matters of Compassion with Talia Drew Karin Lewis, MA, LMFT, CEDS

IN THIS EPISODE:

In this episode, I welcome Talia Drew, Trainee Clinical Psychologist to the show. Talia is currently working towards her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Surrey, where she conducts research into eating disorders. She also works within the National Health Service (NHS) as a trainee Clinical Psychologist and her current clinical rotation is in Child and Adolescent Mental Health services for the NHS. Talia’s research looks into the potential feasibility of an online compassion-focused intervention for young people with eating difficulties. Talia is passionate about the importance of early intervention and accessibility in mental health care, which is why she designed this intervention.

SOME OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED:

  • The lack of services offered for eating disorder treatment and care in the UK’s free Healthcare program.

  • How a dialogue of non-judgment, kindness and wisdom can help develop an inner dialogue of self-acceptance.

  • The ways in which a compassionate approach meets clients where they are at and understands the difficulty in simply existing.

  • The increased vulnerability Talia faced when immigrating into a new culture.

  • How emotion regulation systems are conscious and unconscious strategies that affect our emotions, moods and feelings to help us process stimulus and experience.

  • The three systems at play: the Threat System, the Drive System, and the Soothe System.

  • The necessity of finding balance within each of the systems as opposed to having a particular system dominate, preventing one from finding emotional regulation.
