Episode 62 - The Psychedelic Renaissance with Dr. Adele Lafrance

by Karin Lewis, MA, LMFT, CEDS

IN THIS EPISODE:

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Adele Lafrance, clinical psychologist, research scientist, author and co-developer of emotion-focused treatment modalities, including Emotion-Focused Family Therapy for Eating Disorders. Adele has published extensively in the field of emotion and health, including a clinical manual to support families published by the American Psychological Association. She’s also written a popular parenting book titled: “What to Say to Kids When Nothing Seems to Work.”

Adele is a leader in the research and practice of psychedelic medicine, with involvement in studies examining the healing potential of ayahuasca, MDMA, psilocybin and ketamine. She has a particular interest in mechanisms and models of healing, including emotion processing, spirituality and family-based psychedelic psychotherapy.

SOME OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED:

  • Moving away from caregiver blame.

  • Emotion processing as a factor that can be targeted and transformed today.

  • The Emotion-Focused Family Therapy Model.

  • How honoring a client's desire to exclude caregiver involvement also honors maladaptive communication.

  • If used correctly, psychedelic medicine can offer healing to those unable of healing with conventional therapies.

  • Exploring the benefits of psychedelic medicine to provide a "break" from habitual ways of thinking and seeing oneself and others.

  • The premise that psychedelic medicine can activate inner healing intelligence of the body similar to how bodies react to injury, leading to spontaneous healing.

  • How psychedelic medicine allows for creation of new pathways, both neurobiologically and psychologically through developing new insights and new ways of seeing the world that is more health focused.

  • The theory that psychedelic medicine activates that potentially “stuck” inner healer so that it can engender a cycle of processes that can gives space for a person to move towards health and wellness in a new way.

  • How psychedelic medicine creates opportunities for neuroplasticity, where combined therapy is more likely to “stick.”

  • How psychedelic medicine can afford embodied experiences of one’s essential qualities not otherwise accessible.

  • The healing power of love and spirituality.

  • The notion that those who struggle with eating disorders are often starved for love while simultaneously fearing it.
