ABOUT PAULA SCATOLONI:

Paula Scatoloni, LCSW is a somatic psychotherapist (soma = body in Greek) and Certified Eating Disorders Specialist, through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. Paula is a somatic-based psychotherapist, Certified Eating Disorders Specialist, and Somatic Experiencing practitioner in Chapel Hill, NC. She has a private practice and has worked in the field of eating disorders for over two decades. She has taught extensively on the etiology and treatment of eating disorders through workshops, professional trainings, and conferences for over a decade.

Paula works with those who wish to improve their sense of intimacy and connection to others, resolve old relational dynamics, create a more affirming relationship to the body, develop healthy skills for managing difficult emotions, improve physical vitality and energy level, or decrease feelings of chronic anxiety.

Early in her career, Paula has focused on helping individuals find freedom in the body through traditional “talk” therapy and the expressive arts modalities. She developed the first intensive outpatient program for eating disorders in the nation with Dr. Anita Johnston author of Eating in the Light of the Moon. After relocating to NC in 2006, Paula served as the Eating Disorder Coordinator at Duke University for nine years managing a clinical team, facilitating workshops, and providing academic instruction to professionals both on campus and in the surrounding community.

For the past decade, Paula has followed the emerging neuroscience research incorporating mindfulness-based modalities into her treatment approach. She is certified in Somatic Experiencing, a biophysiological model for the treatment of trauma and nervous system regulation. Paula is currently training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a treatment approach that focuses on the healing of early attachment ruptures and trauma.

Most recently, Paula co-developed a professional training called Embodied Recovery for Eating Disorders. This treatment model weaves together the latest advances in the field of neuroscience, trauma, and attachment while teaching providers how the body itself can serve as a resource in recovery rather than obstacle to be overcome.

When Paula is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and pets. She uses yoga, dance, nature, music, and Pilates for her own self-care and firmly believes that self-care is critical for those in the helping profession.

Recovered Living with Kristie Amadio

Recovered Living with Kristie Amadio

Episode 3 - Recovered Living with Kristie Amadio

by Karin Lewis, MA, LMFT, CEDS

IN THIS EPISODE:

In this episode, I am joined by Kristie Amadio. Kristie is no stranger to the perils of seeking recovery from an eating disorder. After facing discouragement and struggle to try to find professional treatment in Australia and New Zealand, Kristie traveled to the States for 7 months of residential treatment. Kristie continued her early recovery journey with the help of an online therapist and dietician; little did she know that this experience would be the spark that helped her create Recovered Living. As the founder and CEO of this innovative and groundbreaking Eating Recovery Coach platform, Kristie now helps clients by providing practical services tailored to each individual’s needs.

SOME OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED:

  • The gift of accepting help for the recovery process.

  • Learning and living the life skills needed without an eating disorder.

  • The extra support provided from virtual and live-in recovery coaches.

  • Body acceptance and making peace with your body.

  • Shifting your values.

  • Authentically being yourself in recovery.

ABOUT KRISTIE AMADIO:

Kristie Amadio is Founder and CEO of Recovered Living, which offers online eating disorder recovery coaching as well as 24/7 live-in support to people both domestically and internationally.

After 14 years of battling her eating disorder and seeking treatment in both Australia and New Zealand— where she was told she was ‘chronic’ and should expect to struggle with food and body image issues for the rest of her life— Kristie flew to America for intensive treatment and made a full recovery. The experience of multiple treatments in different countries led her to develop Recovered Living; a one-of-a-kind online and face-to-face support system for people in recovery. With a worldwide reach, Recovered Living provides online recovery coaching as well as in-home 24/7 live-in support. The mission for Recovered Living is about making treatment accessible and affordable for everyone, no matter where they live. All of their Coaches are fully recovered and hold the belief that the same can be true for you too

Kristie was stunned by the gap and unequal access to support and resources both here and overseas, so she resolved to make cost-effective support available to everyone, no matter where they lived. By working online and living with people in recovery all around the world, Kristie Amadio is adding a new dimension to the platform used to treat eating disorders. Kristie is a Certified Eating Disorder Coach with the Carolyn Costin Institute.

One of a kind, irrepressible enthusiasm, and candid honesty is what forms the basis of Kristie’s essence. She uses the same strength she required in her own recovery to guide and inspire others, while her genuine compassion allows her to connect easily with clients.

She balances a realistic, no fluff approach with warmth and empathy. Taryn believes that healing can be inspired by the little things (which eventually become the big things).

“With the right emotional support, we can honor and make friends with our suffering, accept it, and find joy in choosing how we move through it. No one does it alone.”

Recovery Bites with Carolyn Costin

EPISODE 1 - Betraying the Soul with Carolyn Costin, MA, MEd, LMFT, CEDS, FAED

by Karin Lewis, MA, LMFT, CEDS

IN THIS EPISODE:

In this episode, I am joined by Carolyn Costin, MA, MEd, LMFT, CEDS, FAED, world-renowned eating disorder clinician, author, and speaker and consultant. Recovered from anorexia, Carolyn became a teacher and psychotherapist. After successfully treating her first eating disorder client, she recognized her calling. In 1996, Carolyn founded Monte Nido, the first residential eating disorder treatment program, and served as Clinical Director until 2016. Carolyn remains active in the field with her private practice, lecturing, teaching, supervising and serving on boards of professional organizations. In 2017, Carolyn founded The Carolyn Costin Institute, which offers continuing education and training for clinicians, coaches, mentors, and others. Serving as both my mentor and teacher for the last 15 years, it felt only natural to have Carolyn as my first guest.

SOME OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED:

  • Defining the term “RECOVERED”

  • Why recovered clinicians are essential in the treatment of eating disorder clients.

  • Why intensive training is vital for clinical success.

  • Taking your character traits from darkness to light.

  • Feeling your feelings in a recovered life.

ABOUT CAROLYN COSTIN:

In her early twenties, Carolyn Costin recovered from anorexia nervosa, earned two master’s degrees, became a teacher and began her career as a psychotherapist. A passionate and dedicated educator Carolyn taught high school and community college for 8 years and brought teaching to her role as an eating disorder therapist.

After successfully treating her first eating disorder client in 1979, Carolyn recognized this was her calling. Her continued success led her to develop and direct several inpatient eating disorder facilities during the period of 1987 to 1996.

In 1996, Carolyn created Monte Nido, the first licensed, residential eating disorder treatment facility in a home setting. She was the first to combine state of the art eating disorder treatment with eastern healing modalities, such as yoga and meditation. She was first to speak out that people with eating disorders could be fully “Recovered” and first to openly hire recovered therapists. Knowing that role models, trust and relationships matter, Carolyn created a program where staff and clients shop, cook and eat meals together like a family. Carolyn wanted clients and their families to have a healing environment where professionals delivered expert care and clients acquired the knowledge and skills necessary for long-term recovery.

Carolyn’s personal history of an eating disorder, her humanistic relational approach, her acclaimed speaking engagements, her six books and Monte Nido’s highly successful outcome study (Brewerton & Costin, 2011) have resulted in Carolyn being one of the most respected and sought-after leaders in the eating disorder field.

A large percentage of Carolyn’s career has been lecturing, training, teaching and supervising clinicians, dietitians, and physicians. Many regularly attend a monthly study group for professionals Carolyn began in the mid-1980s. An official CE provider, through the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) and the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), Carolyn continues to travel nationally and internationally educating professionals and the public about eating disorders.

Having left Monte Nido & Affiliates in early 2016 Carolyn remains active in the eating disorder field on many fronts. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Eating Disorders and stays involved in many professional eating disorder organizations, as a member, speaker, consultant, or a collaborator on projects, such as her work with Project Heal, training eating disorder mentors for Communities of Healing.

In early 2017, Carolyn opened The Carolyn Costin Institute, which offers Eating Disorder Coach Training, Mentor Training, Continuing Education for clinicians as well as other specialized training.
